We are working alongside the Nepal government to provide for the many children who have lost one or both parents in the Nepal flash flood disaster. At this stage the exact scale of need is unclear, however we are aware of several hundred displaced children who are currently in temporary accommodation at army camps and in government buildings. Through this appeal, we are setting up a ‘Children’s Emergency Relief Fund’ that can provide for these children’s long term needs and for after the disaster ceases to be headline news.

The disastrous rock-ice landslide and associated devastating flood of 26th August has claimed the lives of over 1,000 people with almost 5,000 missing. We have been advised of 473 children awaiting reunification with their parents as at 31st August, although the number could increase or decrease as information becomes available. We wish to provide for the long term needs of children who have lost one or both parents primarily through supporting their care within the communities and families.

With immediate effect, we will appoint two new field staff members at our Nepal-based social enterprise partner, Lily’s Leaves, who will be social workers within the affected region. They will work closely with government child welfare committees, ensuring that funds support only those children who have been orphaned or semi-orphaned. Their work will continue for years and be funded through our new 'Children's Emergency Relief Fund' that we are creating through this campaign. Our support may include accommodation, education, healthcare, counselling and essential household costs, with the aim of helping children remain safely within their extended families and communities wherever possible.
