Our Journeyman scheme offers tuition, expertise and guidance to further the careers of letter carvers. The scheme offers short-term placements with one or more master carvers and helps artists develop specific skills and gain in confidence to become fully self-employed.

There are no institutions or formal courses available for stone carvers to develop their skills in lettering and design. The skills needed to complete monuments, memorials and public work, take many years to learn. Many students leave art school or cathedral masonry workshops with out knowing how to gain relevant professional training which will enable them to make a living as a practitioner of this heritage craft. Also, we fear that this craft will die out without the passing on of skills.

We match stone carvers with master carvers who can train them in the highly technical skills of lettering design and carving, and then fund the training. Once the letter carvers are proficient we support their careers through our sales from online gallery, exhibitons and events. We run a commission service to introduce people who want a hand carved memorial, sculture or public work to master carvers round the UK. Lastly we promote the craft of letter carving to the public.
