Tanzania faces a deepening food insecurity crisis. 26 million people are living in extreme poverty, and based on current rates this figure is set to grow. In Ifakara, a growing rural town in south-central Tanzania where the population now exceeds 250,000, many families cannot afford even the modest price of a loaf of bread, sold for just 17 pence. Failed harvests leave the community without a reliable staple food source, and the situation worsened dramatically in the floods of 2025.

The Ifakara Bakery Project solves food insecurity through a simple, high-impact model: for every £1 donated, four loaves of bread are baked, feeding approximately 32 children. The bakery keeps production costs low and quality high, now producing over 400 loaves a day. The Free Bread Fund channels this bread directly to those who cannot afford even the 17 pence cost of a loaf. The Free Bread Fund distributes the bread to kindergartens, hospitals, and refuges, feeding the most vulnerable children.
