Acorn Village want to help 100 adults with learning disabilities in Essex and Suffolk to enjoy fun creative activities such as art, gardening, sport & music. We know these activities improve mental health, communication skills, self-esteem, confidence, a sense of belonging & strong social connection

Mencap’s national research shows 24% of adults with a learning disability feel lonely “a lot,” compared to 3.4% of the general population (Mencap, 2022). Involvement in activities with others can build friendships, improve wellbeing and foster belonging. Adults with learning disabilities face barriers to the outdoors, leading to isolation and poor wellbeing. Tailored interventions in nature can improve motivation, reduce anxiety, and build social connection (Northumbria University, 2024).
These challenges are exacerbated amongst Acorn’s beneficiaries due to their older age, disability, low incomes, and long-term health conditions. Our project tackles these long-standing inequalities through accessible activities. In our experience, systemic inequality is being created through the allocation of different personal care budgets amongst individuals with the same disabilities/ needs. Funding will allow us to level up giving access to our residents and those visiting day services.
