Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury that leaves women and girls incontinent, traumatised and often grieving the loss of their baby. In Sierra Leone, Malawi and Madagascar, many women live for years without treatment, facing poor health, isolation and stigma. Without access to surgery, they are unable to recover from their injury, physically or psychologically, and can remain outcast from society due to their smell, unable to rebuild their lives.
Freedom From Fistula provides free, specialist fistula surgery for women and girls in Sierra Leone, Malawi and Madagascar, helping them recover from a childbirth injury that is often preventable with timely access to skilled maternity care. Following surgery that can cure their condition, every patient receives compassionate care, rehabilitation and tailored support that helps the women and girls regain their confidence, reconnect with their communities and rebuild their lives.
