Research shows just 27% of children play outside regularly, down from 71% in previous generations, yet also shows that time in nature boosts mood, behaviour and lowers anxiety. Access to high-quality nature is getting harder, as UK wildlife sees drastic declines. A Rocha UK’s Partner in Action programme gives 80,000 young people a year access to thriving nature through Forest Schools, outdoor centres, school visits, bug walks and more. All building wellbeing and a lasting connection to nature.

A 2022 study found that only 27% of children regularly played outside, compared to 71% of the baby boomers generation, and yet, research has demonstrated that behaviour, mood and even grades improve when young people spend time in nature. Access to nature is not equal, especially “High Quality” nature (meaning rich in biodiversity). As young people become more disconnected with nature, UK wildlife is also under threat, with studied species having declined, on average by 19% in the UK since 1970.

Positive experiences in nature have been proven to lead to reduced anxiety, better feelings of well-being and also fosters a long-lasting connection to nature amongst young people. A Rocha UK supports over 20,000 acres of land managed for nature through its Partners in Action programme and reserves focusing on vulnerable species and habitats. This creates access to nature for roughly 80,000 young people annually, through Forest Schools, outdoor centres, school visits, ‘Bug Walks’ and more.
