This Christmas marks 20 years since HYT began its work in Uganda. Help us raise £20,000 - £1,000 for every year - in unrestricted funding to keep training refugees and young Ugandans in climate-friendly construction, while building the homes, water tanks and toilets their communities urgently need.

Uganda hosts more refugees than any other African country, while 80% of its population is under 30. Most young people, especially refugees, have no route into stable employment. At the same time, traditional fired-brick construction is stripping Uganda's forests: kilns burn scarce firewood, driving deforestation, and brick prices keep rising as quality falls. Communities urgently need safe schools, homes and clean water, built in a way that preserves the fragile environment.
HYT trains refugees and young Ugandans in Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block (ISSB) construction, a low-carbon compressed-earth building technique that needs no firewood and far less cement than traditional fired brick. Trainees learn a trade and go on to build for themselves and others in their own communities. Many find paid construction work within months of finishing training.
