In Tanzania, girls face deep-rooted barriers to education: poverty, period poverty, early pregnancy, early marriage, gender-based violence and family responsibilities. Families often prioritise sons over daughters. Girls miss up to 4 school days monthly without sanitary products. Female dropout rates are consistently higher than males. Sexual violence and discrimination compound these barriers, leaving vulnerable girls and young mothers without a fair chance of an education.

Umoja will provide 100 vulnerable girls and young mothers with reusable sanitary kits, daily meals, counselling, mentoring, learning materials and life skills covering mental and menstrual health. These interventions remove the barriers forcing girls out of education. Girls will attend consistently, improve academically and gain the confidence and skills to access further education, gain qualifications, employment and break the cycle of poverty.
