The UK is one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries. Human activity and a changing climate have led to severe loss of plants, animals, and fungi. UK species populations have declined on average by 19% since 1970, with 1 in 6 threatened with extinction. To combat climate change and biodiversity loss, we need more people with green skills in the workforce. The hiring demand for green roles increased 87% between 2019 and 2023, yet the UK is facing a shortage of green skills for nature.

Our Young Darwin Scholarships support young people aged 16-25 to develop the skills and knowledge required to secure a green career and contribute to positive action for the environment. This programme is unique in combining hands-on conservation work, outdoor learning, and employability skills, giving people the experience and confidence they need to take the next step in their career. It supports our mission to educate people about nature, get them outdoors, and acting sustainably.
