We believe in the power of creative writing to change lives. At Milton's only surviving home, we want to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves, get creative, and tell their own stories in the place where one of the world’s greatest poems was written.

Humans are storytelling beings. Children who grow up surrounded by books and stories develop vital intellectual and emotional skills, such as language, reasoning, empathy and imagination. UK statistics show that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child's future success. Despite this, only 32.7% of children read for pleasure in 2025, hitting a 20-year low. This is creating a national literacy problem, with 1 in 6 people in the UK now struggling with reading and writing.
We offer story-telling experiences for all ages at Milton’s Cottage, including our after-school creative writing club - helping young people discover the joy of reading and writing in a fun, informal setting. This develops articulacy, creativity, confidence and literacy as well as supporting well-being. We also deliver school-based creative writing sessions to those who will benefit most, including blind, partially blind and deafblind students, as well as SEND and neurodivergent students.
