The John Schofield Trust exists to support the next generation of journalists through 1-2-1 mentoring, networking & training. We particularl support groups that are underrepresented, as we believe journalism should represent all communities and therefore a career in journalism should be open to all.

UK newsrooms face a leadership crisis. Journalists from under-represented and non-traditional backgrounds rarely reach management, and those who do are promoted with little training in how to lead, often leading to talented people leaving the industry. This risks poor retention, weaker journalism, and newsrooms that fail to reflect the communities they serve - just as the industry needs capable, inclusive leaders most.
Our solution is to offer targeted support, initially to a modest sized group of emerging leaders from UK newsrooms. This will be more intense support than our general offering. As well as 12 months of 1-2-1 mentoring, there will be four full days of training, focused on models of leadership and problem solving, and culminating in a confident, supported cohort of diverse leaders. We will ensure the group support each others as peers beyond the 12 months of the programme.
