The Lake District's mountain paths connect millions of people with adventure, wellbeing, nature and each other. But climate change, more frequent storms and increasing visitor numbers are accelerating erosion. Fragile soils are washed into rivers and lakes, harming habitats and water quality. As damaged paths widen, people unintentionally create new routes, causing even greater environmental harm. Without continual care, the very paths that connect us with nature begin to destroy it.
Fix the Fells brings together expert Rangers, volunteers and local communities to protect the paths we love. Using traditional craftsmanship, locally sourced materials and nature-friendly techniques, we repair erosion before it becomes lasting damage. We carefully place every stone to protect habitats, improve water quality, reduces future erosion and keep people safely on the right path, allowing nature to recover .
