Our gardens are home to hundreds of thousands of different varieties of plants and trees, bred for their beauty or usefulness. But this diversity is threatened: more than half the cultivated plants previously grown in the UK or Ireland are no longer available to buy. Protecting this living heritage is essential and urgent - for biodiversity and climate resilience, but also for the cultural and scientific value these plants represent.
Our National Collection Holders are amazing volunteers who are dedicated to protecting the UK’s plant heritage for the future. Through expert care, research and propagation, Collection Holders are protecting 100,000 plants in over 750 National Collections across the country, from miniature orchids to enormous oak trees. But they need more support, and we need to recruit even more volunteers to look after the 200,000 plants that are still missing a collector to look after them.
