Only 4.6% of adults with a learning disability in England are in paid work. Many adults with a learning disability and autistic adults lack the skills and tailored support needed to access employment, leading to isolation, poor physical and mental health, and long-term dependency. Meanwhile, food poverty is at a record high. In Lambeth, almost one in three people experience food poverty, with 24% unable to afford a balanced meal. Surplus food is also wasted while local people go hungry.
Adults with a learning disability and autistic adults will prepare, serve and deliver meals to 500 vulnerable local residents. They will gain catering, hospitality, customer service, communication and teamwork skills, building confidence and increasing access to future employment, training and volunteering opportunities. Free meals will reduce food poverty, improve health and wellbeing, strengthen community connections, and surplus ingredients will reduce food waste.
