Words Matter is an ambitious charity on a mission to improve children’s mental and physical health and development by ending verbal abuse of children by adults. Too many children grow up without warm, encouraging words and stable, secure relationships – the building blocks needed to thrive.

In the UK today, 2 in 5 children (41%) suffer from verbal abuse by adults. These children are criticised, blamed, disrespected, and threatened, which can have a devastating impact on their lives. Recognised as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), childhood verbal abuse by adults (CVA) is a hidden crisis that can leave scars on mental and physical health, impairing a child's potential and casting a long shadow over their future.
We focus on: Research: Building the evidence base which underpins our approach and everything we do. Awareness & Education: Transforming public understanding of CVA and giving adults the tools to change. Collaboration: Bringing together key stakeholders to co-create evidence-based interventions and tools, and working with our partners to host events and build on our successful training pilot to deliver training for parents/carers and teachers to give the knowledge & power to make real change.
