Around 55,000 women and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year, with many facing complex decisions about breast reconstruction. Others choose risk-reducing surgery due to a hereditary breast cancer gene. Emotional strain is high: around 1 in 2 people experience anxiety or depression, yet 1 in 5 women feel unsupported when making reconstruction decisions. Many feel overwhelmed and isolated. Keeping Abreast exists to ensure no one has to face this journey alone.
We provide free, personalised support tailored to each individual's needs. This includes peer-led support groups, one-to-one Buddy support, a Helpline, online "Show & Tell" reconstruction videos, monthly mindfulness sessions, and practical information. Delivered by over 200 trained volunteers with lived experience, our support helps people feel less isolated, make informed decisions about reconstruction, and navigate diagnosis, treatment, and recovery with greater confidence.
