Syrian refugee children in Iraq face the impact of long term displacement, loss, trauma, loss of education and hope, resulting in long term mental health issues and increased vulnerability. The recent regional conflict and economic crisis exacerbates stress on families. Many struggle to provide for their families, which can result in child protection issues; exploitation, child marriage, child labour, abuse and neglect. Children with special needs are particularly vulnerable and isolated.

STEP operates safe, child friendly spaces in the camp offering psychosocial support, child protection services, the development and learning of children and facilitates education for children. The project is complementary to the local school system and is designed as a holistic approach to the needs of children in a protracted emergency situations. We will provide targeted support to those with special needs to access education receive specific therapy and thrive. We will help families thrive.
