Contrary to common misconceptions, people seeking asylum in the UK receive just £9.95 a week to cover all their essential needs. Many cannot afford clothing, toiletries, shoes or transport and are housed in isolated, unsuitable accommodation, far from local communities and support services. For many, even their most basic needs remain unmet. Without access to these essentials, people face unnecessary barriers to health, wellbeing, social connection and rebuilding their lives.

Care4Calais ensures refugees and people seeking asylum can access the essentials they need when those needs would otherwise go unmet. Through thousands of local volunteers, we provide clothing, toiletries, shoes, bedding and other essential items, while helping people access local services and local communities. In a climate of growing hostility, our volunteers demonstrate that compassion, solidarity and hope still exist, ensuring people receive both practical support and a warm welcome.
