Southend YMCA is transforming some worn-out corridors at our Newlands supported housing into warm, trauma-informed "pods", small micro-neighbourhoods where 4 young people leaving homelessness find calm, dignity and a community. Help us turn a temporary room into a place that feels like home.

For 30 years, our Newlands building has been a place where young people leaving homelessness find safety, support and a fresh start, and it's done that job well. But the building itself has aged. Corridors echo, lighting is harsh, and the décor now feels institutional rather than homely. We know that for young people arriving with trauma, the surroundings matter enormously, and we want the environment to match the quality of care our team already provides.
We're building on three decades of experience by reimagining our corridors as trauma-informed "pods": micro-neighbourhoods where four flats share a calm, welcoming identity. Guided by our RIBA-accredited architects and our psychologist, each pod will gain acoustic ceilings, warm lighting, safe flooring and softer colours, plus personalisation touches like shelving and pinboards. It's the natural next step in how we help young people feel they truly belong.
