Spear Hastings exists to help NEET 16-24 year olds overcome barriers and get into work, college or training. Our employability programme helps 60+ young people a year from Hastings and the surrounding area to gain the skills, mindset and confidence they need to move into a successful future.

Nearly 1 in 10 young people in Hastings are unemployed. This is the highest rate in East Sussex, nearly double the national average (9.8% vs 5.8%), and it's rising fast. A seaside town with an uneven, underinvested economy, Hastings contains some of the most deprived areas in the country. Its young people have been hit doubly hard by Covid's social and economic impacts: over half of our trainees have mental health challenges and left school with few or no GCSE's. We help them move on.

We help unlock the huge potential of every one of our trainees. Spear Hastings, run by HTH Church in partnership with the Spear, coaches young people to develop work-ready skills, a positive mindset and a roadmap for their next steps. Through four weeks of group sessions and 121s we help trainees prepare for work, education or training, and give them six months of follow-on support afterwards. Over 60% of our trainees find work after Spear and are still there a year later.
