The countryside can be an intimidating and unaffordable place. Humans thrive when we spend time in nature, but not everyone gets the opportunity. When we all experience the wonders of the natural world, we are better equipped to look after it. And nature flourishes when we do.

Removing barriers to environment education is urgent. Children living with disabilities, from low-income households, and from non-White backgrounds are less likely to visit green spaces. Greater numbers of young people in rural areas expect to leave the countryside, citing affordability, social isolation and lack of opportunity. At the same time, the number of people appropriately skilled to look after nature is insufficient for the future needs of our natural world.

We enable people to access the countryside by removing financial and social barriers to environment education, countryside skills and green jobs. Through engaging programmes and events open to all ages and backgrounds, people build confidence around animals, understand green spaces and feel more comfortable spending time outside. They learn the skills to look after nature while they’re with us and take those skills home, where they’re likely to behave in more nature-friendly ways.
