Our partner school in Uganda, Kamuganguzi Janan Luwum Memorial Secondary School, is in desperate need for more accommodation for girls. These girls face long walks to and from school, putting them at risk of attack and/or dropping out of school. They need a safe space to study, sleep and socialise.

The school is in a remote, rural area: many pupils have to walk 1-2 hours to/from school, leaving them at risk of rape, attack or injury on dark, rural roads or paths. Most students arrive home after dark, and then need to do domestic chores and homework, often using bad light sources (e.g. paraffin lamps) straining their eyes. The journey to and from school is particularly problematic during the rainy season with pupils unable to get to school meaning interrupted studies and lower attainment.

We will fund a new dormitory for an additional 150 girls at the school each year in order to protect them from attack and prevent them from dropping out of school. By enabling these girls to stay at the school, their attendance levels will improve, and they will be better able to complete homework and concentrate on their studies, leading to better attainment levels. They will also have access to good WASH facilities and be taken care of by a female matron, increasing their health and wellbeing.
