Every childhood should be rich with joy, confidence and self-expression, and music can be life-changing for disabled children. We will take interactive workshops and concerts into SEND schools so disabled children can explore their creativity and experience the joy of live music without barriers.

Music benefits all children, but is particularly transformative for those with disabilities, boosting development, communication and emotional wellbeing. It is proven to improve literacy, language and numeracy. Yet, many disabled children miss out on vital creative experiences. Barriers including transport costs, staff capacity and unmet access requirements make it increasingly difficult for SEND schools to take students to live music events, creative workshops and extracurricular activities.

Count Me In will take music directly to disabled children and remove barriers. In 2027 we will tour SEND schools with interactive workshops and relaxed concerts, allowing children to try instruments and make their own music. Led by an accessible music expert and ensemble of disabled and non-disabled musicians, this will boost mood and cognitive skills, reduce behavioural difficulties and inspire awe. A public concert will conclude the tour, taking inclusive music-making to the wider community.

In the foreground students of the SEND school sit and watch the 14-piece Orchestra as a musician stands up to present his French horn.A young boy in a wheelchair holds a tambourine on his lap, while a teacher kneels beside him to assist in tapping it.A man who is a BSO musician stands in the centre of a circle of students, holding his double bass which is the same height as him. In the background, a student in a wheelchair watching on is smiling and raising his hands. In a school hall, two BSO musicians - one man, one woman - are in front of an audience of children, holding their arms out in front of them as they sing. The man kneeling on the floor has a drum in front of him.
