Young people in Tower Hamlets grow up in Canary Wharf's shadow, yet nearly 1 in 5 young Londoners are unemployed and those facing the greatest barriers are never asked why. Toynbee Hall will pay 10 young people to become peer researchers: building skills and generating evidence to improve services.

Tower Hamlets has England's highest child poverty rate and 60% of its neighbourhoods are among the most income-deprived in the country. Benefit claims among 16–24 year olds rose in almost every London borough last year while older groups fell: young people are bearing the brunt of the crisis. Navigating poverty, caring responsibilities and language barriers at home, those most affected are rarely asked what would help them. Decisions that shape their futures are made without them.

Toynbee Hall has worked with communities facing poverty since 1884; we know the people closest to a problem understand it best. We'll recruit and pay 10 young people with lived experience as peer researchers. Paying them recognises their expertise and opens participation to those who can't volunteer. Trained in interviewing and communication, they'll work with peers to turn their experience into recommendations for services. Each participant gains paid work experience, new skills and confidence.
