Ninety percent of brain development takes place before the age of five, yet until KHULA established its preschools there was no access to formal early childhood education in our rural communities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Today, 75% of children in our district live in poverty and many experience malnutrition before starting school, leaving them without the foundations needed to learn, develop and thrive.
KHULA provides quality early education through four rural preschools and a network of community crèches, reaching over 800 children each year. Children receive two nutritious meals a day, bilingual early learning, developmental assessments, access to expert teachers and family support. Our evidence-based approach ensures children arrive at school healthy and ready to learn, with 99% of children completing two years in the programme achieving school readiness benchmarks.
