10 community-led ECD centres will be established to provide a nurturing environment for young children to learn and play, supported by 30 trained caregivers. Children will transition to primary school better prepared, improving longer term educational outcomes, wellbeing and livelihoods.

Beneficiaries
Children aged 3 to 6 in rural Malawi face severe barriers to early learning. Many lack the foundational skills necessary for primary school, leading to high drop-out rates and poor educational outcomes, undermining future livelihoods and wellbeing. ECD services are severely constrained, with a lack of essential learning and play materials, and nurturing care from well-trained teachers. Weak management structures and a lack of clear sustainability plans exacerbate the problem.
SEED will establish 10 community-led ECD centres in Nkhata Bay West, replicating Temwa’s success in Nkhata Bay North. The Project will: train 30 caregivers in the national ECD curriculum with inclusive, play-based learning; provide learning materials and nutritional support; monitor child development indicators and school-readiness outcomes; and build the capacity of 100 School Management Committee members to run the ECD centres sustainably beyond the life of the project.
