No child should have to sleep on the floor or go without a winter coat. Yet child poverty is a growing problem affecting 4.5 million+ UK children, the highest ever. In Brighton & Hove, 1 in 4 children are living in poverty, equating to 9 children in every classroom. Pelican Families are living with acute financial hardship impacting their ability to meet basic physical needs e.g. staying warm, dry, clean & fed. This has profound impacts on physical & mental wellbeing & children’s prospects.
In just 7 years, we have delivered over 30,000 parcels to families struggling to afford the essentials. Pelican Parcels is an essential component of the local support system for families facing crisis. We work with over 150 referral partners across Sussex allowing us to reach the families most in need. Last year, we distributed over 68,000 items which included beds, buggies, gifts, clothing, toiletries, nappies, toys and books; every item makes a direct and meaningful difference to families.
