A healthy justice system is essential for a fair society, but access to justice is declining. Two in three people in England and Wales face legal issues, yet public funding of justice has been cut by 22% since 2010. Today, 40% of family cases have no legal representation, up from 14% in 2013. Many represent themselves in cases with life-changing outcomes such as loss of housing or access to children. They need support to navigate systems once designed to protect them, now barriers to justice.
Across our 12 services in England and Wales, our 1,500 trained volunteers provide practical and emotional support to people facing court alone. We help them understand legal processes, complete forms, prepare for hearings, attend court with them, and signpost to free legal advice. Our free and accessible support equips clients with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to manage their case, ensuring they have the best chance of a fair hearing and accessing justice.
