We will establish low-cost pre-school nurseries at five rural primary schools in Uganda. This will include basic training for volunteer teachers, training on Phonics, providing books, classroom resources and playgrounds, and starting village savings schemes to assist parents to pay school fees.

More than 8 in 10 children in Uganda cannot read and understand a simple story by age 10 (UNESCO), and only around half of Primary 3 pupils achieve basic literacy and numeracy standards (UNICEF). Part of the reason for poor attainment is a lack of pre-primary education, which is a crucial foundation for learning; only around 4 in 10 young children in Uganda attend pre‑primary education (UNICEF). In Uganda, almost all nursery schools are privately owned and are not regulated.
From 2022-2024, we established low-cost pre-school nurseries in five rural (government) primary schools in the Amuru District of Northern Uganda that had spare classroom spaces. We trained volunteer teachers, introduced Phonics methodology, provided resources, and established village savings schemes (VSLAs) for parents. All the nurseries are still running independently and many surrounding schools have been inspired to establish their own. We want to expand this initiative to five more schools.
