Our project will enable 150 adults with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire to improve health, confidence and independence through outdoor activities, gardening and green social action activities. It’ll reduce isolation, build community connections, promote sustainability and benefit wildlife.

The rate of avoidable deaths for adults with a learning disability (LD) is 40% -LeDeR 2023. Only 9% of people with LD meet recommended activity levels, contributing to obesity, poor cardiovascular health & low mental wellbeing -LD Notts JSNA 2026. Also, people with LD are 2x as likely to experience mental health problems, exacerbated by higher risk factors of social isolation, deprivation & lack of support -NHS Digital. Therapeutic outdoor activities that boost wellbeing are often inaccessible.
From our five centres in Nottinghamshire, knowledgeable and supportive staff and volunteers will deliver accessible horticulture and ‘skills for volunteering’ sessions, with alternatives to suit different interests, still encouraging time outside. Participants will learn to garden, grow food, cook, protect wildlife and care for outdoor spaces: at Reach, at home and in the community. Energy-saving tips will be embedded into activities, encouraging people to think greener and save money.
