Girls in Sudan, South Sudan and Somaliland face pressures that reinforce each other: conflict disrupts learning, poverty forces impossible choices, displacement breaks school routines and early marriage cuts childhood short. The shortage of qualified female teachers makes these challenges even harder to overcome. Without women in the classroom, girls miss out on role models, mentors and trusted safeguarding support, making it harder to stay in school, feel confident and learn safely.
In 2025, Big Give supporters funded 50 teacher training scholarships across Sudan, South Sudan and Somaliland. In 2026, WTI will fund the next cohort of women to enter accredited teacher training. Scholars will receive tuition, living and pastoral support, alongside safeguarding preparation, so they can complete training and move into classrooms where female teachers are urgently needed. For many girls, a female teacher offers encouragement, protection and a powerful example of what is possible.
