GDWG is a small charity that makes a big difference, and at the moment we are needed now more than ever. With the expanding use of immigration detention and rising anti-migrant sentiment, we need your help to continue providing essential support to people in crisis in detention and post-release.

The number of people held in immigration detention across the UK has risen by 17%. People in detention are held indefinitely and the uncertainty of how long they will be detained has a terrible impact on mental and physical health. The impacts of this are worsened by multiple overlapping identities, such as racialised ethnicities, speaking English as a second language or identifying as LGBT+. After detention, many people are released back into the community often to homelessness and destitution.
The GDWG team holds initial assessment meetings four times each week, going behind the locked doors of detention to provide essential support such as phone credit, clothing and facilitating access to solicitors and interpreters. Our volunteer visitors offer weekly visits, providing friendship and emotional support. After detention, we welcome people into a diverse and supportive community, that includes 70 volunteers, to support their long-term recovery and together we call for change.
