Be Free Young Carers (BFYC) is the only specialist organisation in Oxfordshire supporting young carers. We aim to improve the social and emotional wellbeing of young carers by giving them time away from their caring responsibilities, as well as offering emotional support and guidance.

Having additional caring responsibilities at a young age can lead to a number of difficulties. Young carers often lack time to experience the things other children do. They are more likely to experience bullying, social isolation and difficulty maintaining friendships. Young carers can struggle to balance their caring responsibilities with schoolwork, which can impact them academically. Young carers are also more likely to experience mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression.

BFYC aims to support young carers with their mental wellbeing by offering 1:1 emotional support and counselling services. Young carers supported by BFYC are given the opportunity to attend youth groups and respite trips which provide valuable opportunities to socialise and form friendships with other young people who also care for a family member. BFYC aims to build strong connections with young carers, as well as their families and schools, to create a robust support network.
