Children in South Africa are being facing a severe literacy crisis. With greater demands on the schools in the townships it is known that over 70% of learners in Grades 1 to 4 (6 to 10 years) cannot read for meaning. We want to change that and give them the literacy support they need.

The literacy crisis in South Africa continues to increase as the population grows. Children in grades 1-4 cannot read for meaning which results in their education being undermined. They leave school at the earliest point without qualifications so they cannot get employment that is meaningful and that will allow them to earn a living, support themselves and their families and break the cycle of poverty.
Help2Read has pioneered 1 to 1 literacy training in township schools from the earliest point. Our Literacy Tutors are trained specifically to deliver a programme the gives each child personal tuition at the right level to enable them to learn at pace and develop confidence in their ability. The programme also encourages them to view reading as a pleasurable activity that can be developed outside school - at home and in the community. Our motto is "Read, Read, Read"!.
