Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses affecting an estimated 2-3m people in the UK, with profound psychological, physical and social impacts on people and their families. There has been a steep rise in eating disorders the last 10 years, significantly accelerated by the pandemic. Thresholds for NHS treatment are high so people are seriously ill before they receive help, yet we know early intervention with specialist care is crucial to improve outcomes (Treasure et al, 2005).
SWEDA began as a self-help support group in 1992 and has grown to give 1-2-1 preventative therapeutic support to over 1,500 children and adults in 2025/6 and reach thousands more through support groups, outreach, training for professionals and our twice-weekly helpline. SWEDA works with people who would not otherwise be able to access specialist help in the South & West. Our service promotes recovery, resilience and long-term wellbeing for our clients.
