This festive period and within the Year of Reading, we will give over 22,000 children in 14 underserved UK communities a book of their own to choose and keep, helping make reading feel personal, enjoyable and within reach in communities where book ownership cannot be taken for granted.

In the places we work, many children are growing up in areas of high deprivation where book ownership is far from guaranteed. Reading is often associated with school - something structured, assessed and directed by adults - rather than something chosen freely or enjoyed at home Research shows reading for pleasure remains in long-term decline, and children are more likely to disengage when reading feels like work. But research also points to the solution; access to books and freedom to choose.
Through schools we already work with through our Pride of Place Programme, we will provide over 22,000 children in underserved communities with a book to choose, take home and keep this Christmas. With support from HarperCollins, children can choose from a wide range of quality books, so the book they receive feels like a gift, something they are genuinely interested in, and something that is theirs to keep.
