Pine martens were thought to have disappeared from Staffordshire — until 2022, when a trail camera captured one at our Cotton Dell Nature Reserve. Recent records from North Staffordshire suggest a small, fragile population may be clinging on. If so, we must act now to protect them.

Wildlife numbers are plummeting and 1 in 6 species now faces extinction. Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is fighting to halt this decline. If a small population of pine martens remains in Staffordshire, it is likely to be fragile and isolated, with too few animals to recover without help. They need to be protected. With your help, we can create a county where pine martens and all threatened species thrive.

If we can learn more about our threatened species, identifying where the vulnerable populations live, we can support their recovery - in Staffordshire and across the UK. Such careful conservation work will return pine martens to our woodlands. This will help restore the natural balance of our forests supporting other wildlife – in time it could help to reduce grey squirrel numbers, creating the conditions red squirrels need to recover.
