Mud is a crucial wetland habitat. The soft ground is alive with insects, waders probe for food, amphibians shelter in its coolness and birds use it as a material for safe nests. But extreme changes in our climate is destroying it. Rising temperatures bake and harden the ground, so wildlife can’t search for food. Heavy rains wash it away, leaving birds without a vital nest material to keep chicks safe. Without action, this fragile habitat may vanish, leaving wetland wildlife vulnerable.
With your help, WWT will restore and protect vital mud habitats. Our dedicated reserve teams manage water levels, moving it around our reserves to where it’s needed most. When needed, we’ll rotavate our reserves to generate mud again. By creating resilient habitats, wildlife like the snipe can feed and birds like house martins can create safe nests. Together we’ll ensure wetlands and wildlife can thrive now and in the future.
