State education in South Africa is often poor and unreliable. This failure traps children in poverty and denies them a fulfilling and independent future. By providing early years education for some living in the one of the poorest urban communities we can help give them a good start.

The lack of good quality pre-school education in South Africa means many children start school with a disadvantage. Pre-school education encourages children's physical, social and emotional development. Without early learning experience children often lack the confidence, basic communication skills to adapt to formal schooling. This can inhibit their progress long term and ultimately their ability to make the most of their formal education. The impact is greater on those from poorer backgrounds
We will support two existing early years education projects based in Alexander township by funding the provision of appropriate materials and equipment. The focus will be on children's developmental growth, targeting motor skills, encouraging sensory exploration and imaginative play. This will include indoor and outdoor play equipment, sand and water trays, tricycles, books, art materials, educational toys, puzzles, dressing-up clothes and musical instruments.
