Three years ago,Parkinson’s UK had a vision.A shortage of Parkinson’s specialists meant access to care depended on where you lived. That had to change. We launched an ambitious appeal and have since funded 44 specialist roles. But with £1m to go,the Christmas Challenge can help us reach our £9m target.

With more than 40 symptoms, Parkinson’s is a complex condition. Parkinson’s nurses are specialists who provide expert care, support and a continuous point of contact. Around 20% of people diagnosed have limited or no access to this care. Specialist nurses should support no more than 300 people, yet many are caring for over 1,000. And with the number of people with Parkinson’s projected to increase by around 20% by 2030, even more pressure will be placed on already stretched services.
In 2024, we launched a 3 year appeal to expand the Parkinson’s workforce and improve access to specialist care. Thanks to our supporters, we have funded 44 of our target of 60 roles, helping more people access expert care while strengthening local NHS services. With £1 million still left to raise before the appeal ends in December 2026, the Christmas Challenge represents a vital opportunity to help us reach our goal and ensure more people with Parkinson’s can access the expert care they deserve.
