Minoritised young people face inequity in access to music education due to financial and societal barriers. According to UK Music, only 15% of children at state schools receive sustained music tuition, compared to 50% at independent schools. A recent Youth Music report found that young people are feeling less musical, especially those from North England, and that young people in Yorkshire (49%) and the North West (57%) are among the least likely in England to feel supported when making music.
We inspire lifelong engagement with music and the arts, building young people’s confidence, resilience and life skills needed for a successful future. Local musicians will lead introductory live performance assemblies and music careers Q&As in 6 schools engaging 3,600 young people; and more intensive workshops in a further 8 schools, benefiting 160 young people, improving skills in playing, composition and performance, and showing them it’s possible to have a career in the music industry.
