Mary Hare is a non-maintained special school and registered charity for deaf children and young people from across the UK. We transform the lives of around 160 profoundly deaf children and young people, aged from 4 to 19. We remove the barriers presented by being deaf in mainstream schools.

A deaf child can feel isolated in a mainstream setting and may struggle to make friends. Profoundly deaf children who are educated in mainstream schools do not achieve their full academic potential. Deaf people are less likely to be employed than the general population (Office for National Statistics). They are overrepresented in lower status, lower paid occupations (RNID). Rate of depression amongst deaf British Sign Language users is double that of the general population (BMJ Journal)

Through being in a community of deaf children, and interactions with their peers, children gain a positive sense of their deaf identity, increasing their self-esteem and social and emotional wellbeing. We provide specialist education in small classes, with a horse-shoe desk arrangement so pupils can lip read each other and the teacher. We provide a full curriculum including GCSEs, BTECs, A Levels and Diplomas offered at various levels. Classrooms are equipped with group aid technology.
