Assizes for Devizes: Unlocking Wiltshire’s Stories will rehome the much-loved Wiltshire Museum and its internationally important collections in the currently derelict and at-risk Grade II* listed Devizes Assize Court. It will rescue and restore it to create a world class cultural destination.

Situated in rambling Georgian buildings with 25 different floor levels, small spaces unsuitable for displays, inadequate toilets and poor visitor facilities, our Museum can’t meet the needs of our visitors, showcase our incredible collections that safeguard over 6000 years of history, or accommodate a larger special exhibition programme. It is no longer fit for purpose and our visitors, current and potential, deserve better - a setting where our collections, communities and audiences can thrive.

We will revitalise the historic Assize Court, as the Museum’s new home, removing it from the Heritage at Risk Register. We will create an accessible, exciting and engaging cultural and community hub, provide a sustainable future for Wiltshire Museum and put Devizes on the tourism map as part of the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage journey. The Assize Court is a key part of a new canal-side redevelopment and will play a vital role at the heart of a major regeneration initiative in the town.
