RoR is dedicated to ensuring all former racehorses thrive in their lives after racing. We also support vulnerable horses in times of need through our welfare safety net. Vulnerable horses are those demonstrably in danger or at risk of neglect or suffering without charitable intervention.

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) provides a critical safety net for former racehorses at risk of neglect, abandonment, or inappropriate rehoming. Demand for our support is rising. In 2025, we supported 121 horses through our welfare safety net, an 83.3% increase on the previous year, and early indicators show this demand continuing to grow in 2026. Much of what we are seeing is linked to cost-of-living pressures facing owners, as well as owner inexperience in caring for an ex-racehorse.

We provide emergency welfare support for former racehorses, working through our partners to fund rehabilitation and rehoming where possible and offering expert advice to owners facing crisis. At the same time, our education programme equips owners with the knowledge and confidence to care for their horses responsibly, reducing the risk of future welfare issues. However, delivering this work costs over £1.3 million annually, and rising demand is placing increasing pressure on our resources.
