Marking Spike Island’s 50th anniversary, Make & Learn is a new learning programme for school children and young people. Working with local community partners, we aim to tackle inequality in access to the arts in Bristol and to inspire a more diverse future generation of artists.

The decline of arts education in state schools, rising living costs, and reduced public funding mean that fewer children and young people—particularly those living in Bristol’s most disadvantaged communities or with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)—can access the transformative power of the arts. Without these creative opportunities, existing inequalities deepen, pathways into creative careers become more limited, and the future diversity of the creative sector is put at risk.
Spike Island is an experimental space where art is made, shared and enjoyed. Working with local community partners and our studio community, Make & Learn provides free, year-round creative workshops and activities for children and young people in South Bristol, particularly those with SEND and others who face barriers to engaging with the arts. Through play, experimentation and hands-on making, we will nurture creativity, build confidence, and help more young people see themselves as artists.
