95% of amputees in sub-Saharan Africa don’t have access to prosthetic legs, trapping them in a cycle of isolation and poverty. STAND is working to change this by providing prosthetic legs for free, building care systems, and funding aftercare to ensure amputees thrive.

Millions of amputees in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to prosthetic legs, and care systems are underfunded, unequipped, or non-existent. Rising amputations from road accidents and diabetes are also making this crisis worse. Without mobility, people with limb differences cannot earn a living, attend school, or live independently, trapping them in a cycle of poverty. Stigma around disability further entrenches this, putting up barriers for amputees within their communities.
We’re looking to fund STAND’s core work, which is giving legs to amputees, as well as providing the essential care needed to help them thrive. We know our work has impact, which is life-changing for those with limb loss. Research says that for every $1 invested in assistive tech, like legs, you get $9 value back to society. Restoring mobility directly helps people get back to work or school, and indirectly removes the care burden on family and friends. The impact of our work is clear.
