Otters need specialist care and facilities, and our Centre on the Isle of Skye has cared for over 265 otters, receiving 10-12 injured and orphaned otters per year. As well as all the day-to-day requirements, the enclosures require constant maintenance as otters are very active and mischievous.

Many otters are injured/killed on our roads or severe weather separates cubs from their mother when they are too young to fend for themselves. There are limited facilities available nationwide able to look after otters as they progress through rehabilitation back to the wild & cubs require at least 12 months of care prior to release. Cubs are born year round and arrive in care any time. IOSF has over 30 years experience caring for otters and works to raise awareness with the public/road users.
IOSF provides a facility that otters, and other wildlife, have a safe place to transition back to the wild, where possible. There is constant, essential maintenance of enclosures ensures the provision of facilities as/when required, along with our otter hospital and with regular costs such as feed, bedding and heating. IOSF is also raising awareness with road users and in contact with road maintenance and management companies to help reduce road deaths and improve mitigation.
