Theatre should be accessible to everyone, not reserved for the privileged. We open the arts up to women with experience of the criminal justice system or who are at risk, providing trauma-informed theatre workshops that support women to find their voice and create positive change in their lives.

The women we reach share experiences of gender-based violence, mental ill health, problematic substance use and homelessness. We know that engaging in the arts can help women safely address these complex issues. However, cuts to arts education and an increasingly inaccessible cultural sector mean that those at the sharpest end of society are less likely to engage in art; less likely to experience the wellbeing benefits of creative engagement; and less likely to pursue careers in the arts.
Since 1979, Clean Break has been the only women’s theatre company of its kind. Our Members Programme offers women with lived-experience of the criminal justice system, or who are at risk, access to high-quality, community-based theatre workshops and wrap-around support services. Our unique creative offering provides women with the skills, confidence, space and support they need to heal, rebuild their lives, and for many, access employment opportunities in theatre.
