There is a national shortage of refuge accommodation. Women’s Aid reports that 65% of referrals were declined in 2024–25, largely due to lack of space and limited provision for specialist needs (e.g. wheelchair access, substance misuse, complex family needs). Only 1.1% of refuge vacancies are wheelchair accessible. Being unable to access refuge accommodation leaves women and children at risk of further abuse, homelessness and unable to afford essentials.

Stop Domestic Abuse is fundraising to complete the Sanctuary Women’s Refuge, a purpose-designed nine-family refuge in Hampshire for women and children. Due to be completed in 2027, it will increase refuge capacity by 7% across the county and contribute to growth in the national network. The refuge will provide safe, high-quality accommodation and specialist support to help families move from crisis to safety, including two specialist accessible units, tripling disabled provision across Hampshire
