Romsey Abbey's famous tower clock has stood guard over the town for centuries. The current 90-year-old clock face is now in urgent need of refurbishment from damage caused by weathering. There is clear evidence of rust and cracking, and the entire cast-iron structure may be compromised.

Romsey Abbey's tower clock is an iconic feature of the town centre. The most popular postcard is a picture of the market place with the clock clearly visible at the top of the tower. The current clock is over 90 years old, and last had a significant overhaul 35 years ago. The 10-foot dial face of the clock is made of cast iron and is showing significant cracks and rusting, and experts say the dial may be structurally compromised. It needs treatment in a specialist workshop.
The experts say the dial face should be removed for more detailed examination and repair in a specialist workshop. This will require scaffolding and a powerful hoist to remove and then re-install the clock face, which weighs over 2/3rds of a ton. We will also replace the rotten wooden flagpole above the clock with a fibreglass one. The total cost is likely to be at least £60,000. The works will happen once the peregrine falcons and their chicks have flown their nest on the tower this autumn.
